CLEAR LAKE — Clear Lake’s Jaylen DeVries signed his national letter of intent to play football at Southern Illinois Thursday. DeVries is the Lions’ all-time passing leader, throwing for 6319 yards and 68 touchdowns in four years of play. DeVries says he enjoyed his time while visiting the Southern Illinois campus.

DeVries was recruited by a number of schools and says at first it was a tough decision to choose Southern Illinois.

The Salukis will likely have a senior starter at quarterback next season, but DeVries has been told to go into next fall’s practice with a competitive mentality.

The Salukis this season were 7-5 overall and 5-3 in an always competitive Missouri Valley Football Conference. That’s an improvement from a 2-9 record in 2018. DeVries feels the program is heading in the right direction.

DeVries this past season threw for 2358 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also ran for 519 yards and eight touchdowns.

CLEAR LAKE — Iowa fans as well as former coaches and players are still mourning the death of legendary head coach Hayden Fry, who died earlier this week. Clear Lake football coach Jared DeVries played for Fry from 1995 to 1998. He says Fry was a great influence on his life.

DeVries says it was an honor to play under Fry.

DeVries says he enjoyed Fry’s sense of humor.

DeVries says Fry’s impact on the state was not just with winning football teams, as farmers are appreciative with his “America’s Need Farmers” effort that continues today.

Fry died on Tuesday at the age of 90.

AMES — With the early signing date behind them and final exams wrapping up, attention at Iowa State returns to next week’s Camping World Bowl game against 15th ranked Notre Dame in Orlando . Coach Matt Campbell landed a recruiting class of 22 players.

Campbell is looking forward to getting back on the practice field.

The Camping World Bowl takes place on Saturday December 28th with kickoff at 11 o’clock Iowa time.
