DES MOINES (AP) — An Iowa criminal investigator suggested to colleagues last year that busting college athletes for online sports betting would impress the public and the powers that be. Division of Criminal Investigation special agent Christopher Adkins wrote in his February 2023 email that if players get suspended or lose scholarships, so be it. Attorneys for more than two dozen Iowa and Iowa State athletes caught in a 2023 gambling sting obtained Adkins’ email and 32 others through an open records request. The athletes filed a civil lawsuit last week against the state and its public safety and criminal investigation agencies for violating the athletes’ rights and damaging their reputations. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. The athletes’ attorneys contend tracking software data was illegally obtained because there was no search warrant issued.

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa baseball team hosts their final home series of the season beginning tonight against Northwestern. Iowa is 10-8 and currently sixth in the league race and the top eight teams qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. The Wildcats are at the bottom of the conference standings with a 2-13 record under first year coach Ben Greenspan.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller who says the Hawkeyes won’t take Northwestern lightly.

Heller says recent history shows this will be a competitive series.

After this weekend’s series with Northwestern, Iowa closes out Big Ten play with a trip to Illinois next weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS — Former Iowa State star Bridget Carleton is getting ready for her sixth season in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx. Carleton appeared in 38 games a year ago and averaged just over four points per game. She is coming off a successful season overseas in Hungary.

Carleton played for the Canadian National Team that took part in an Olympic qualifying tournament in February and is expected to be part of the team that will compete in the Paris Olympics.

The WNBA will take a month-long break for the Olympics.

An influx of talented rookies is bringing added interest into the upcoming season.

The Lynx open their preseason schedule on Friday night by hosting the Chicago Sky.
