MINNEAPOLIS — A late rally resulted in another Big Ten title for the 3rd-ranked Iowa Hawkeye women. Iowa outscored Nebraska 17-12 in overtime and edged the Huskers 94-89 at the Target Center on Sunday, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. It was a game the Hawkeyes trailed by eight with two and half minutes remaining in regulation. Iowa guard Caitlin Clark finished with 34 points and 30 of them came after halftime. She also had 12 assists.

Clark called it a gritty win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Audi Crooks scored 23 points including the go-ahead basket with 41 seconds left and Emily Ryan made all eight of her free throws in the fourth quarter to help Iowa State wrap up a 67-62 win over No. 17 Baylor in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament on Saturday. Ryan finished with 12 points and she collected her program-record 746th career assist and 10th of the game on Crooks’ go-ahead basket. Addy Brown scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Iowa State. Dre’Una Edwards scored 17 points and Bella Fontleroy 14 for the Bears. Iowa State faces #19 Oklahoma later this afternoon in the semifinal round

 

 

 

ST. LOUIS — The Drake men survived a furious second half rally by Indiana State in St. Louis. The Bulldogs surrendered an 18 point second half lead then used a late 7-0 run to edge the Sycamores 84-80 and claim a second straight Missouri Valley Conference Tournament crown.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. With the victory the Bulldogs are 28-6 and will play in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years.

DeVries credits the players for building a consistent program.

Tucker DeVries led the Bulldogs with 27 points, including four of five from three point range.

Sophomore guard Connor Enright hit a three pointer with two minutes remaining to snap a 76-all tie and Drake led the remainder of the way.

 

 

 

 

IOWA CITY — The at-large hopes for the Iowa Hawkeye men are most likely gone after a disastrous start on Senior Night, The Hawkeyes fell behind 12th-ranked Illinois by 21 points in the opening half in a 73-61 loss on Sunday evening, as you heard on KGLO. Iowa shot only 35% and was outrebounded 50-33.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes got to within 51-47 midway though the second half before the Illini responded with an 8-0 run.

The Hawkeyes will be the seventh seed in this week’s Big Ten Tournament and face 10th-seed Ohio State at 5:30 on Thursday evening, with the pre-game at 4:30 on KGLO.

 

 

 

 

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Arthur Kaluma scored 23 points, Cam Carter added 21 and Kansas State beat sixth-ranked Iowa State 65-58 on Saturday. David N’Guessan added 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds on senior day for the Wildcats, who gave their flickering NCAA tourney hopes a big boost heading into the Big 12 Tournament. Curtis Jones had 16 points and Keshon Gilbert and Tamin Lipsey 13 apiece for the Cyclones. They trailed by as many as 17 in the second half, managed to trim their deficit to single digits, but could not come all the way back like they did against BYU earlier in the week. Iowa State is the #2 seed in the Big 12 Tournament and will face either 7th-seed Texas or 10th-seed Kansas State on Thursday evening in the quarterfinals.

 

 

MASON CITY — The Mason City Toros hockey club had their season come to an end over the weekend. After taking the opening game of their three-game first-round playoff series 2-0 at Granite City on Friday, the Lumberjacks came back with a 4-3 win over the Toros in Mason City on Saturday, and then won the playoff series on their home ice with a 4-1 victory on Sunday.

 

 

MASON CITY — The North Iowa Bulls dropped both games of their two-game weekend set at home against Minot, 5-1 on Friday night and 3-0 on Saturday. The Bulls host Austin on Friday and Saturday night.
