STANFORD, CALIFORNIA — It was heartbreak for the Iowa State women in the NCAA Tournament late last night. Brooke Demetre’s three pointer with 18 seconds remaining in overtime gave Stanford the lead for good as the 5th-ranked Cardinal edged the Cyclones 87-81 in Palo Alto.

That is Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly. The Cyclones had a late three point lead in regulation and nearly pulled off a stunning upset.

Emily Ryan led the Cyclones with 36 points.

Ryan felt it was a special season for the Cyclones.

ISU finishes with a record of 21-12.

 

 

 

 

IOWA CITY — The 2nd-ranked Iowa Hawkeye women look to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen with a victory tonight over West Virginia. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder says the Hawkeyes must limit mistakes against West Virginia’s pressure defense.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder who says too many turnovers will limit shots.

Iowa star Caitlin Clark says West Virginia turned the game around with their press in a first round win over Princeton.

The Hawkeyes rolled to a first round victory over Holy Cross and Clark says the little things become magnified beginning tonight..

Clark says the Hawkeyes hope to take advantage of the home court.

West Virginia is 25-7 and coach Mark Kellog says they need to try and keep the Hawkeye crowd out of the game.

Kellog says Iowa’s Caitlin Clark combines an ability to score with the ability to create baskets for others.

Kellog on the challenge the Hawkeyes provide.

DES MOINES — After leading Drake to six seasons of 20 wins or more Darian DeVries has left to become the new coach at West Virginia. The Bulldogs won two straight Missouri Valley Conference Tournament titles and played in the NCAA Tournament three times in the last four years. Drake athletic director Brian Hardin.

Hardin says he was first contacted by West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker the day after the Bulldogs lost to Washington State in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs have a talented, young roster and Hardin says his first priority is to find the right coach.

Hardin says the Bulldog program is in a great place because of the success Darian DeVries enjoyed.

Hardin would not say if two-time Missouri Valley Player of the Year Tucker DeVries will follow his father to West Virginia despite numerous reports that he will.

 

 

 

 

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tamin Lipsey scored 15 points to lead No. 2 seed Iowa State to its seventh Sweet 16 with a 67-56 victory over seventh-seeded Washington State in the NCAA Tournament. Curtis Jones added 14 points for the Cyclones. They will play third-seeded Illinois in the East Region semifinals on Thursday night at TD Garden in Boston. Jaylen Wells scored 20 points and Myles Rice had 13 for the Cougars, who were sent back to the Palouse still in search of their first Sweet 16 appearance since Tony Bennett was on the sideline in 2008.

 

 

 

 

SALT LAKE CITY — Iowa’s defense was non-existent Sunday night in an NIT loss at Utah. The Utes had seven three pointers in the opening half and used a late 13-0 run prior to halftime in a 91-82 victory.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes finish the season with a record of 19-15.

Patrick McCaffery led the Hawkeyes with 19 points.

 

 

 

 

KANSAS CITY — Iowa State’s David Carr and Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen won titles on Saturday night at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Kansas City. Carr won his second title and became the 17th Cyclone to win multiple titles after beating Penn State’s Mitchell Mesenbrink 9-8 in the 165-pound title match. Carr, along with his father Nate who won three national titles for ISU from 1981-83, are one of four father-son duos in Division I history to each win two or more national titles. Parker Keckeisen won the 184-pound title match with a 14-5 major decision over Oklahoma State’s Dustin Plott. Keckeisen, who was a runner-up last season, became UNI’s 23rd national champion and was the program’s first undefeated national champion since 1963. Iowa’s Drake Ayala was runner-up at 125 pounds, dropping a 7-2 decision to Richard Figueroa of Arizona State in the finals.
