NFR bareback rider Garrett Shadbolt out with ankle injury 2023

Bareback rider Garrett Shadbolt, who qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2021 and 2022, will be sidelined for an extended period of time after breaking the fibula bone in his right ankle over the weekend.

“We were planning on tubing on the Niobrara River,” said Shadbolt, 26. “It is a pretty uneven bottom and I hopped in and landed right on a rock. I’m supposed to find out today when I can have surgery and I’m hoping it is this week. Once I get surgery it will probably be six to eight weeks to heal up. I’m hoping to be back out there the second half of July. It definitely wasn’t a good time to have this happen.”

Shadbolt is presently 12th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $40,633.

Shadbolt, who is from Merriman, Neb., finished a career-best fifth in the 2021 world standings with $192,919. He placed in five rounds at the NFR in Vegas earning $96,906. Last year, he placed 13th in the world standings and earned $151,257. He placed in two rounds at the NFR and earned $47,308.
