MASON CITY — The Kirk Apartments in downtown Mason City have been severely damaged by fire. Here’s what we know up to this point:

== Firefighters were called at about 1:30 to a fire in a first-floor apartment of the building. The fire appeared to be fully under control by 4:00 PM. At about 5:15 PM, smoke developed in the west side of the building, with a fire that quickly spread to all portions of the structure. The roof appears to have sustained major damage on all sides.

== All 44 residents of the building have been accounted for

== None of the residents have been injured as reported prior to the fire starting again at 5:15 PM.

== Firefighters remained on the scene as of 8:00 PM.

We have been doing live video updates at times on the KGLO News Facebook page of the fire. To see our first four updates, see below.
