IOWA CITY (AP) — Iowa star Caitlin Clark says she will leave the Hawkeyes after this season and enter the WNBA draft. Clark made the announcement Thursday on social media. She is 18 points away from passing LSU’s Pete Maravich for the all-time NCAA Division I record for men or women with 3,650 career points. The guard, with one more year of eligibility, became the all-time leading women’s scorer in major college basketball by scoring 33 points to pass Lynette Woodard and post her 17th career triple-double in a 108-60 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night. Clark is expected to be the top pick in the draft on April 15. The Indiana Fever, who have the first pick, indicated on social media shortly after Clark’s announcement that they intend to select her. The Fever had the first pick in last year’s draft as well. They selected Aliyah Boston out of South Carolina. The forward is averaging 14.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

 

 

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caitlin Clark’s final regular-season home game at Iowa is likely to bring one of the priciest tickets in women’s college basketball history. The cheapest secondary-market ticket listed Thursday on TickPick.com for the Sunday game against No. 2 Ohio State was $481 after Clark announced on social media that this would be her final season at Iowa. Among TickPick’s most expensive available seats was a $5,503 ticket in the first row near midcourt. At least four tickets were listed for over $6,200. USA Today reported that TickPick’s $577 average price for Sunday’s game surpassed the $394 cost of the Feb. 15 game in which Clark broke the NCAA women’s major scoring mark.

 

 

 

DES MOINES — The Drake women are on the doorstep of a Missouri Valley Conference championship. The Bulldogs outscored Illinois-Chicago 21-11 in the second quarter and raced away to an 84-63 victory in the Knapp Center. Drake is a win away from clinching at least a share of its first Valley regular season title since 2019.

That’s Drake coach Allison Pohlman. The Bulldogs shot 58 percent for the game, including nine of 20 from three point range.

Katie Dinnebier scored 18 points and Grace Berg added 17 as the Bulldogs improved to 16-1 in the Valley.

 

 

 

CEDAR FALLS — The UNI women beat Valparaiso 78-59 on Thursday night. Emerson Green opened play with a layup, scoring the 1,000th point of her career. Grace Boffeli led the offense with 19 points. She added 11 boards for yet another double-double this season. Northern Iowa is now 12-14 overall and 11-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference and will close out the regular season hosting Illinois-Chicago on Saturday afternoon.

 

 

 

WAVERLY — The Wartburg women’s basketball team opens the NCAA Division III Tournament at home tonight against Wisconsin Lutheran. The 6th-ranked Knights are 25-2 and are making their eighth straight appearance in the tournament.

That’s Wartburg coach Bob Amsberry who says an experienced senior class has been a key part of their success.

Wisconsin Lutheran enters the game with a record of 23-4.

Illinois Wesleyan and Concordia Moorhead collide in the other first round game. The winners meet Saturday night in the second round.

 

 

 

 

IOWA CITY — The Iowa Hawkeye men play their final road game of the regular season Saturday afternoon with a visit to Northwestern. The Hawkeyes are 9-9 in the Big Ten and this will be the first meeting with a Wildcat team that at 11-6 is third in the conference race.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes will be challenged on defense by a Northwestern team that is the top three point shooting team in Big Ten play at 42 percent.

Northwestern senior Boo Buie is averaging nearly 20 points per game and is also fourth in the Big Ten in assists. McCaffery believes he is one of the top point guards in the country.

McCaffery says Buie is a leader at both ends of the court.

Tipoff on Saturday is scheduled for 4:30 with the pre-game at 3:30 on AM-1300 KGLO
